Seminoles Start Spring Practice

March 19, 2014

Although the team is just a little more than two months removed from their BCS National Championship, the ‘Noles are strapping their helmets on again and heading back out on the practice field today. But, first, head coach Jimbo Fisher, quarterback Jameis Winston and defensive end Mario Edwards Jr., addressed the media, hours before the team’s first practice.

Fisher spoke on his current roster and his expectations for the national champs.

“You relax you’re in trouble, we’ll keep the same intensity, and the same focus,” Fisher said. "This team has to find their own identity.”

Quarterback Jameis Winston, who is also the closer on FSU’s baseball team, is elated about this time of year where the redshirt freshman is balancing life as a student and as the Seminoles relief pitcher and starting quarterback.

The Heisman Trophy winner as been balancing both sports most of his life, and did the same for the ‘Noles in the spring last season. To Winston balancing both is natural, and it’s easier since he has done it before.

“I don’t worry about going back and fort, I make sure I have everything down pack,” Winston said. "Coach Fisher and I communicate, coach Mike and I communicate and the communication around here is real good, so I never have to worry about anything.”

However, Winston is expected to miss one practice this weekend when the baseball team travels to Clemson, S.C., for an ACC face-off against the Clemson University Tigers.

Fisher expects this Saturday to be the only practice Winston will miss all spring.

Given the star two-sport athlete's busy schedule, Fisher said he does not plans to minimize Winston's reps a practice.

“It’s going to be very important for him to learn a whole new group of receivers and keeping that great bond with Rashad  and Nick,” Fisher said.

Junior defensive end Mario Edwards Jr., who was the nation’s top defensive end in 2012, is expected to have more of a veteran role on the defense, the defensive line especially.

The rising star seemed excited about becoming a leader, but noted that there are other talented guys on this defensive.

“I definitely have to step up and be a leader for the defensive line,” Edwards Jr., said. "We lost big player makers like Timmy (Jernigan Jr.) we have people that could step up and make those same kind of plays.”

There were also 31 other guys, who wanted to show the 50 plus NFL scouts and coaches what they could bring to an NFL organization.

Nine of the total participants were also invited to the NFL scouting combine in February. Some wanted to improve combine numbers.

Junior running back James Wilder Jr. was one that made major improvements, running a 4.54 40-yard-dash, which was a huge improvement from his disappointing 4.86 at the combine.

“I bombed my 40 at the combine,” Wilder said with a laugh. “You can’t really have excuses for that – for stumbling out, or nothing like that. They don’t want to hear that.”

Other athletes wanted to show their versatility, and pick up where they left of at the combine:
